Hyundai and Kia Have Filed Patent Cases in the United States, Toyota and GM Have Also Filed Lawsuits

NPE, which purchased Mitsubishi patents, launched a patent infringement action on Hyundai Motors and Kia Motors.

Melnabib accused the company of “intentional infringement of six patents, involving navigation and voice recognition.” In turn, Toyota and GM sued Melnabib.

Hyundai Motor Company and Kia Motors Corporation were once again subjected to patent lawsuits in the United States. Melnabib, a US patent management business (NPE) founded last year, has begun patent action in the United States against Hyundai Motor business and Kia, after Japan’s Toyota and the United States’ General Motors (GM). Melnabib’s three patent cases against Hyundai Motors, Kia, Toyota, and GM all involve comparable technologies, including as navigation and voice recognition. The associated patents were all created by the Japanese Mitsubishi Electric Corporation.

According to the industry on the 24th, Mel NaviIP, a US patent management business (NPE), filed a patent infringement complaint against Hyundai Motor business and Kia on the 18th (local time) in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas (Judge Rodney Gilstrap). Melnavib claimed that Hyundai Motor Company and Kia Motors infringed on six of its patents on purpose. The patents in question pertain to navigation and voice recognition systems.

Melnabib claimed that the 6th generation (Gen6) navigation voice recognition system in Hyundai Motor Company’s 2021 Genesis G80 and the conventional 5W generation (Gen5W) navigation voice recognition technology in Kia’s 2022 EV6 infringed on its patents.

Melnabib also sued GM for patent infringement on the same day, citing a similar patent. Toyota was already sued in May of last year for infringement on Melnavib’s patent. The court where the patent action against GM and Toyota was filed is the same court that Melnabib filed a lawsuit against Hyundai Motor Company and Kia. The judge presiding over the case also happens to be the same as Judge Rodney Gilstrap.

Melnavib claimed both Toyota and GM each violated four of its patents. In each case, three of the four patents are identical to those used in the lawsuits brought versus Hyundai Motor Company and Kia Motors. Melnabib claimed that Toyota was a general infringement and that GM, Hyundai Motors, and Kia were deliberate infringers. If both the patent infringement claim and the willful infringement claim are approved, the sum of compensation may increase.

Unified Patents, a defence NPE, filed an invalidation trial (IPR) with the US Patent and Trial and Appeals Board (PTAB) for one of the three patents that Melnabib used in all three lawsuits, a speech recognition device patent (Patent No. 8,060,368). problem that has been highlighted.

Melnabib is a non-profit organisation that was created in the USA last year. Melnabib’s patent in the dispute was previously submitted and registered by Japan’s Mitsubishi Electric. ‘1205 Investments’ bought 19 U.S. patents from Mitsubishi Electric on February 24, 2022, then one week afterwards, on March 1, 2022, Melnabib acquired 15 US patents through 1205 Investments.

Furthermore, a patent issue between StratosAudio and NorthStar Systems in the US is currently being handled by Hyundai and Kia.
