Tesla Improves Driver Monitoring, Phases Away Steering Wheel Nag

Tesla has made plans to phase out the “nag” feature, which now forces users to provide resistance to the steering wheel at specific intervals while using Autopilot, according to Elon Musk. The nag will be “incrementally lowered, proportionate to increased safety,” Musk said in a tweet.

Tesla will no longer require drivers to exert force on the steering wheel when using Autopilot, according to Musk’s January announcement. Musk reacted to a tweet from @WholeMarsBlog, who questioned whether FSD Beta customers who have logged upwards of 10,000 miles could decide to turn off the annoying steering wheel nag. At first, Musk’s response was, “Agreed, upgrade coming in Jan.”

Since then, Tesla seems to have made the decision to gradually lessen the nag on the steering wheel. The time interval at which the car scans for active engagement has changed throughout the years, but it typically lasts between 30 and 60 seconds. This can occasionally frustrate drivers.

NHTSA is Paying Attention

Tesla’s Autopilot system has been under investigation by NHTSA. The NHTSA’s acting administrator, Ann Carlson, has underlined the importance of completeness and attention in the study, which also aims to ascertain whether or not users of Autopilot are paying attention. The NHTSA approached Tesla about the intended elimination of said steering wheel nag, Carlson disclosed in January.

The NHTSA’s worries regarding driver attention while using Autopilot may have prompted Tesla to lower the steering wheel nag in the face of this scrutiny. Tesla could show its dedication to boosting safety while progressing its automated vehicle technology by gradually eliminating the nag.

Rules for autonomous vehicles are affected

Tesla may face regulatory obstacles as it attempts to phasing out its steering wheel annoyance. The NHTSA and other regulatory bodies must continue to be in regular contact with Tesla, and the company must show that switching to vision-based monitoring won’t jeopardise security. By doing this, Tesla can continue to lead the market while influencing rules for autonomous vehicles in the future.

With its aim to gradually remove steering wheel annoyance, Tesla has a chance to work with regulatory bodies to improve driver monitoring standards. While continuing to advance self-driving technology, Tesla can contribute to the development of a safer environment for users of autonomous vehicles by collaborating extensively with the NHTSA and other organisations.
