The developers at Apple have developed a fascinating, if perhaps overengineered, system that would greatly increase visibility surrounding the vehicle and also enhance the cornering light abilities.
Two light sources are contained in a single housing that houses the headlights. While the second one is for the cornering light, the first one offers the two common low-beam and high-beam options.
The patent also discusses the potential for an additional shutter that, when used in low-beam mode, would restrict a part of the light emitted from the primary light source, and when used in high-beam mode, would eliminate corner light from the lens. The cornering light could also be cut off and distinguished from the conventional low-beam headlamp using the shutter.
To illuminate the vehicle’s exterior, a second reflector is positioned behind the second source of light (the corner light area of the body).
The patent depicts extra light sources situated around the projection lens for greater brightness. The two primary light sources may even be used by the system to output light through a centre lens. In essence, the two light sources are combined to create a single, extremely powerful high-beam light.
The graphic below demonstrates how the corner light projection onto the car will improve the driver’s visibility of the side of the road, the roadway, and objects situated to its side. The cornering light may also come on as you turn, as you back out of a parking space in low light, or as you switch lanes on a highway.
