About a year has passed since Smart unveiled their all-electric #1. The next model, the Smart #3, will make its premiere at the Shanghai Motor Show next month. The business will introduce one new model a year until 2027.
The new electric car will be somewhat shorter than the VW ID.5 and larger than the #1. The whole crossover’s styling was unveiled in November by leaked photos from China’s Ministry of Information Technology. Its front end is comparable to that of the company’s first electric vehicle. With a slanted windscreen and a sloping roof line, the #3 embraces coupe-like design.
According to Automotive News Europe, Dirk Adelmann, CEO of Smart Europe, said the new EV would be “bigger, roomier, and sportier.” Although the #3 is longer than the #1 and has a longer wheelbase as well, the EV layout should provide enough space for both passengers and freight.
The #3 would have at least 2 different power outputs, according to the leaked information from the previous year, which most likely indicated a single- and dual-motor setup. The output of the two engines, which are 152 and 268 horsepower respectively, is comparable to that of the Smart #1. It will be interesting to see the bigger #3 receive the same tuning as Brabus provides a modified edition of the #1 that produces 442 horsepower.
Until the official announcement, the range and battery size will probably remain a secret. The SEA platform from Geely, which also supports the Smart #1, will be used by the #3. The technique is also used by Lynk & Co. and Volvo. ANE claims that Smart is holding onto the number “#2” for the time being because it plans to use it for a forthcoming Smart ForTwo alternative.
On April 17, Smart will disclose position #3. By the end of the year, it will begin selling in China, but it won’t enter the European market until 2024. In 2019, Smart left the American market. By 2027, the brand’s selection will increase to six or seven vehicles, according to the company’s product roadmap. Now, Mercedes-Benz and Zhejiang Geely Holding Group have a 50/50 joint partnership with the business.
