Electrify America: The first EV charging station for Electrify America, the largest public DC fast charging infrastructure in the US, has been installed in Hawaii.
With the debut, 47 states and the District of Columbia will be represented on the Electrify America network. The Oahu island’s Pearl City is home to the new Hawaii EV station. It has four EV chargers with a maximum 150kW output. Drivers in Hawaii have the same payment options as those at any other Electrify America charging stations, including using a credit or debit card or the Electrify America smartphone app.
The US Department of Energy stated that Hawaii had 940 charging outlets and 406 EV charging stations as of 2022. There are 77 DC fast chargers, with Level 2 being the most common. The state unveiled their EV infrastructure strategy in September as a result of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Legislation, which was passed under the Biden administration.
EV adoption is increasing swiftly in Hawaii
Hawaii’s Roads Division deputy director, Ed Sniffen, said:
When it comes to the adoption of electric vehicles, Hawaii leads all other states. Under this programme, we will address any gaps in the state’s charging infrastructure, making charging more convenient and lowering the cost of owning an electric vehicle—supporting conversion in line with our ambitious state goals.
According to Hawaii’s Monthly Energy Trend, there were 23,450 passenger EVs in the state as of February 2023. This represents an increase of 644 vehicles (2.8%) from January 2023 and a rise of 4,833 vehicles (26%) from the same month the previous year. (For context, the state has 1,068,071 registered passenger vehicles.)
There are already 800 stations overall for Electrify America and Electrify Canada, with 3,500 DC fast chargers operational or the development phase complete. By 2026, they anticipate that the US and Canada will have more than 1,800 charging stations with over 10,000 individual chargers. The company’s chargers provide up to 150kW or 350kW of speed.
