Since January 1, Giga Shanghai has been producing Model Y SUVs with an updated suspension system for greater comfort.
For Better Comfort
The Model Y crossovers with an improved suspension system have been discreetly being produced at Tesla’s Shanghai plant for the past two months.
According to the company’s statement posted today on Weibo, the elastic and damping parts of the suspension system of the Model Y, which is manufactured in China, have been improved to smooth out bumps at low speeds and provide a more stable ride at high speeds.
From January 1, 2023, Giga Shanghai has been producing Model Y vehicles, and all of them have an improved suspension system, according to Tesla.
The Model 3 sedan and the Model Y are both made at Tesla’s Shanghai factory, which is the largest in the world in terms of capacity. It’s unclear if the Model 3 manufactured in China also makes use of the upgraded suspension technology.
According to the firm, Tesla has improved the Model Y’s shock absorber compression damping, letting the car to pass through low-speed impact portions with less damping force and less jarring.
According to the company, the enhanced suspension system also enables the car to maintain a steady ride while traveling at high speeds.
According to Tesla, the Chinese-made Model Y has a highly flexible double-wishbone front suspension and a stable five-link independent rear suspension.
According to the company, the suspension update increased the shock absorbers’ top stiffness by 50% compared to the pre-upgrade settings, which filtered out more road impact on the car.
As per Tesla, the spring stiffness has been decreased by 2N/mm to 5N/mm, which lessens jolts and improves the ride’s comfort.
By altering the vehicle’s suspension vibration frequency such that it is farther away from the 4-5 Hz frequency at which the human body is prone to resonate, Tesla also claims to reduce motion sickness in older adults and young children.
One of the reasons the Model Y is so well-liked in China is that its customers often prefer larger SUVs when looking to purchase a vehicle.
The No.1 SUV in China
According to a report released by the China Passenger Automobile Association (CPCA) on January 11, the Model Y holds the top spot in sales of premium SUVs with a starting price above RMB 300,000 ($43,440), with 315,314 retail sales in China for the entire year 2022.
Price Change
Tesla reduced the initial price of the entry-level Model Y from RMB 288,900 to RMB 259,900 on January 6 in China, a reduction of RMB 29,000 from the previous RMB 288,900.
A month later, on February 10, Tesla increased the price of the base Model Y in China by RMB 2,000, to RMB 261,900.
Tesla increased the costs of the Model Y Long Range and Model Y Performance, the two more Model Y variants, by RMB 2,000 each on February 17. These two variants’ most recent starting prices are RMB 311,900 and RMB 361,900, respectively.
On February 15, Bloomberg reported that Tesla would stop a portion of its Shanghai plant’s production until the end of the month in order to renovate the facility in preparation for starting to introduce a redesigned Model 3 to the Chinese market.
According to figures given by the CPCA last month, Tesla sold 66,051 vehicles built in China in January, including 39,208 vehicles exported and 26,843 vehicles delivered in China.
