By the beginning of next year, Honda India intends to introduce the Activa electric, its first electric scooter. One of the company’s top executives confirmed this development.
India and Japan are co-developing Activa electric, which will be entirely manufactured in India to reduce costs. Interestingly, this new electric vehicle will feature an electric powertrain and a fixed battery, despite being based on the existing Activa 6G platform.
At Honda’s Manesar factory, these parts will probably be made in-house. The company intends to make significant investments in the creation of hybrid assembly lines, which would enable it to simultaneously produce EV and ICE two-wheelers.
The fact that Activa electric will only reach a top speed of 50 kilometers per hour suggests that the company is targeting customers who commute only a short distance. However, there are no specifics regarding the battery’s specifications or the total charging time.
Even though Honda stated that it was not putting a lot of emphasis on developing new EVs for the Indian market, the company decided to produce one e-scooter given the expanding EV market in India.
The company believes that ICE products will continue to make up a significant portion of the market for the next few years, and while it will eventually introduce newer EV models, the majority of its energy and time will be spent on them for the time being.
