Reportedly, an unexpected announcement came into highlight recently from the state-owned company China Three Gorges Corporation (CTG). Basically, it’s a HiNa Battery GWh-scale production line in Fuyang, in Anhui province. Since the same went live and by doing so, the world’s first commercial sodium ion batteries became a reality now.
Notably, HiNa Battery has been founded with a specific goal to focus on the production of sodium ion batteries. The same has been supported by CTG and the Fuyang city government. Notably, the company first released its sodium-ion battery back in 2017. Whereas it owns more than 30 patents in that field respectively.
Sodium-ion batteries are substantially high-cost saving for large-scale energy storage solutions
Talking in regards to Sodium-ion batteries then it provides substantially high-cost saving for large-scale energy storage solutions. HiNa Battery’s production line presently has a capacity of 1 GWh. On the other hand, its work to expand to 5GWh is already in progress.
Furthermore, batteries produced by HiNa have an energy density of 145 Wh/kg and can handle 4,500 cycles. While the next stage motive at 8,000 to 10,000 cycles and up to 200 Wh/kg energy density as per the company. CATL has come up with its own sodium-ion battery in 2021 with an energy density of 160 Wh/kg.
In addition to this, BYD has more solid plans of action when it comes to its own sodium batteries. As the company has claimed that it is to start making the new sodium ion cells in the second quarter of next year. Although, the same has been denied by the company later.
In regards to another report, and as per the same, BYD Seagull will be the first car to feature the new battery chemistry. The report repeats the time scale with the vehicle scheduled in order to launch around the second quarter of 2023.
Also, there’s a huge pressure from the battery industry for lithium equivalents. On the other hand, Sodium seems like a natural choice, as easier to mine and process. Therefore it resultant, it is comparatively cheaper. While the technology is enhancing itself at a very fast pace and sodium-ion batteries are no longer considered a delusion despite being a most substantial solution for large-scale deployment.
